Islamic Republic News Agency: USA and its sabotage of the UNSC

The Islamic Republic News Agency (IRNA) attended a United Nations Security Council Conference today regarding the United Nations Organization Stabilization Mission in the Democratic Republic of the Congo’s (MONUSCO) ending mandate in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) and the future of conflict in the region. Discussion and debate during the council were extremely productive with delegates bringing up innovative ideas such as improving border security of the DRC and Uganda using not only physical barriers but also technological ones. Furthermore, delegates were able to efficiently resolve the issue of preventing rebels from spreading to other neighbouring countries. However, there were some delegates deliberately intending to restrict and limit the scope and depth of debate and the delegate most guilty of this was the delegate of America.

Throughout council, the delegate of America constantly brought up infeasible and flawed solutions which would be impossible to carry out on the ground. One such solution was freezing the assets and resources of the rebels which would ideally impact the rebel’s progress and capabilities. However, such a solution is nearly impossible in reality as it would entail the monitoring of funds flowing in and out of the DRC through not only legal but also illegal means. Such a solution would require a large amount of manpower which MONUSCO currently does not have. Furthermore, MONUSCO is inadequately prepared and equipped for such a task as recently, they have reduced the amount of troops deployed thus making such a solution impossible to be carried out.

The delegate of the USA was also unclear and vague on his proposed solutions. During council, the delegate of USA brought up the proposal to negotiate with the government of the DRC and also the rebels in the region through the use of incentives and leverages. However, this solution is extremely vague and unclear as it does not specify and elaborate on how negotiations will be initiated and what kind of incentives the UNSC will use in order to convince the rebels and the government. Furthermore, the rebels currently have leverage on MONUSCO and the UNSC with their possession of the ebola based biological weapons which they threatened to use on UN troops in the region. The delegate of America has yet again showed to the world their country’s blatant disregard of the value of human life as they propose impossible solution after impossible solution which would only make the issue spiral out of control.

Additionally, the delegate of USA also proposed increasing the amount of MONUSCO peacekeeping troops stationed in the DRC to significantly increase patrols and checkpoint staff along the DRC’s border. Although this is more feasible than the other solutions proposed, it will still be hard to carry out due to the DRC’s border being filled with natural obstacles such as forests which will limit the maneuverability and effectiveness of troops deployed to patrol the border. Furthermore, this solution only focuses on the DRC’s border with Uganda and neglects the other borders the DRC shares with its other neighbouring countries. This would definitely be extremely hard to carry out and impossible to fully patrol all of the DRC’s borders. The infeasible plan of the delegate of the USA would lead to greater instability in the region and possibly escalation of the conflict as rebel groups armed with the ebola based bio weapon have the opportunity to escape through the DRC's many other porous borders with other neighbours. Thus, a better plan of action that has been considerably deliberated upn should be proposed to solve the pressing issue of DRC's porous borders.

However, considering the USA's desire and ability to carry out economic terrorism, further flawed proposals which may have detrimental effects on the region may continue to surface. Hence,The Islamic Republic News Agency would like to appeal to the Delegate of USA to look ahead and consider the impacts and implications that their proposals may have and local parties and stakeholders in future councils. Additionally, caution should be exercised by regional powers especially the DRC when interacting and accepting aid from the USA to protect their sovereignty.
